San Antonio LGBTQ+ Chamber of Commerce Expresses Support for Moving Municipal Elections to November

San Antonio, TX — December 15, 2025 — The San Antonio LGBTQ+ Chamber of Commerce has formally expressed its support for a proposal to move the City of San Antonio’s municipal elections for Mayor and City Council from May to November, citing the importance of strengthening voter participation, accessibility, and civic engagement.

As an organization dedicated to advancing equitable access, representation, and economic opportunity for LGBTQ+ and allied businesses, the Chamber emphasized that a healthy local economy depends on a strong and inclusive democracy. Municipal elections held in May have historically resulted in lower voter turnout, particularly among working families, small business owners, young voters, and historically underrepresented communities, including LGBTQ+ residents.

“When participation is limited, communities are less fully represented and confidence in local decision-making is weakened,” said Luis A. Vazquez, Executive Director of the San Antonio LGBTQ+ Chamber of Commerce. “Expanding access to the ballot helps ensure that the voices shaping San Antonio’s future reflect the people who live, work, and build businesses here.”

From a business and economic development perspective, the Chamber noted that civic engagement plays a critical role in fostering stable leadership and informed policymaking. Entrepreneurs and employers are more likely to thrive in communities where residents feel empowered, represented, and connected to their local government.

The Chamber views the proposed change as a practical, nonpartisan policy solution that reduces barriers to participation, supports higher voter turnout, and contributes to a more inclusive economic environment.

The San Antonio LGBTQ+ Chamber of Commerce respectfully urges City Council to consider this proposal as an opportunity to strengthen civic participation, promote equity, and ensure that every San Antonian has a meaningful voice in local democracy.
